We’re a few hours away from the opening of our Wednesday market which will be moving a few feet this year to better serve customers. Last season vendors set up right on Dunbar Street in downtown Spartanburg but this year you’ll find them around the fountain on Morgan Square. Besides allowing shoppers to enjoy Morgan Square, it frees up parking for shoppers who will driving into downtown. Spaces will be available on Dunbar Street for shoppers to park and Hub City Farmers’ Market staff will be on hand to help transport produce.
Come by and drop your business card off or enter your name to win $10 in market vouchers for the Wednesday Market. We’ll see you there.
Today was the last day of our pilot CSA or Community Supported Agriculture program. For the last five weeks, 20 HCFM CSA members received a bag of goodies each week that included a variety of produce and eggs from three local farmers/HCFM vendors.
What did these folks do to deserve such good fortune? Well, it’s probably best to explain how a CSA works. Access Atlanta breaks it down nicely. Different styles of these farm-to-community models are popping up each year and, with the mission of getting more local, healthy food on Spartanburg plates and to give local farmers more opportunities to to grow their harvest and find new outlets for their produce, we wanted to try our own. It wasn’t too difficult to find 20 local food lovers to invest in local farmers and enjoy great food. Papa’s Produce, Hughey/Seay Farm and John Smith Hill Farm delivered their shares to our office each week where members picked up their goods. Members also received weekly recipes to help them plan how to use their share.
It’s been a learning experience for us and our vendors (a standard fridge can fit produce for 20 people but not much more), but we hope we created a great experience for members and vendors. Stay tuned to see future HCFM CSA possibilities. In the meantime, former HCFM vendors Parson Produce and SHAREcroppers Farm have their own CSAs that sell shares to Spartanburg residents.
